San Francisco is a fashion city

Say goodbye to the endless parade of Patagonia vests and Allbirds making their daily commute to Blue Bottle (absolutely no offense to either of these brands!).

San Francisco is a fashion city now.

Tech is the Bay Area’s shining beacon of progress, and now that the fashion girlies have entered the chat, the merge of these two seemingly opposite worlds has resulted in something truly unique to the future of both: fashion-tech.

Fashion tech is the intersection of fashion and technology, covering everything from material innovation to digital garments and AI shopping experiences.

You may have already heard voices in the ether talking about how AI and fashion are coming together (see: Ask Ralph). Notable fashion-tech brands include Phia and Daydream, but there are many, many more.

San Francisco offers a perfect location for the emergence of this industry just beginning to explode. And those who have waited to bring out our leather trenches and leopard prints are READY.

My excitement around the evolution of San Francisco into a fashion city comes from my deeply personal love of clothes and style. Fashion has been an obsession of mine since before I could talk. It is how I express myself, and my outfit truly dictates my personality for the rest of the day. Many can attest to things going downward quickly if I don’t like my outfit…

I attended an event in San Francisco this past week hosted by the Queen of Fashion Tech, Mary Korlin-Downs, and was beyond thrilled to see how amazing everyone looked. I felt at home, and equally inspired by the outfits I saw.

What excites me even more was the focus on vintage and secondhand shopping as integral to the evolution of fashion tech. Platforms now give us access to the vast stores of incredible vintage finds and secondhand clothes that we never knew about before. See ThredUp for a great example (they are the largest fashion resale platform and just had an excellent rebrand!). My hope, along with others, is that this new availability will coincide with the ever-growing focus on sustainability in fashion.

When we have so much access to secondhand, we have an expanding opportunity to use it!

Fashion tech reveals the craftsmanship and quality of vintage and secondhand by giving us a window through the use of technology. It feels like the perfect blend of history and future-forward thinking together.

I look forward to seeing San Francisco Fashion Week on the yearly agenda very, very soon.
