Fable

I am a fully converted mushroom girlie now. I have always loved them, however, my passion has only grown as I’ve discovered the true power of fungi.

While it is definitely true that mushrooms are having a cultural moment of relevancy in the wide world of wellness and health, the use of mushrooms as a delicious alternative to typical meat products brings them real star power.

One company is doing the work to bring more mushrooms to the forefront in food. That company is Fable.

Fable is, in essence, shiitake mushrooms. No meat, just ten ingredients total (including the shrooms themselves and water). Also, the company is 100% carbon neutral.

Mushrooms are crucial to the science of healthy soil because they help keep the system strong. We need robust soil, especially topsoil, because that’s the basis for everything that grows. The microbial fungi digest organic materials that other organisms can’t, turning it into nutrients that plants can use to grow. Regenerative agriculture methods help restore and strengthen soil microbiome and mushrooms are vital to the entire process, contributing to the whole growth of our natural world and reducing CO2 in the atmosphere.

Jim Fuller, Michael Fox, and Chris McLoghlin are fungi experts and co-founders of Fable. They are the scientists and passionate entrepreneurs behind the endeavor, working to show the magic of mushrooms.

It feels unjust to say that Fable is a meat substitute, because that reduces the idea down to Fable acting as second-fiddle to beef or pork. It’s not. Fable stands on its own as umami-rich and flavorful, perhaps even more so.

You may have heard of them before, because they are featured on Zac Efron’s Netflix show, Down To Earth in season two, episode two. So, if you like saving the planet, saving adorable animals, ZAC EFRON looking glowy in nature, and DELICIOUS FOOD, you should definitely check it out. It will make you very hungry.

It is worth noting that switching up one’s lifestyle entirely is a big ask. I am a big seafood fan (see tinned fish) and will probably be eating seafood for a while. I do, however, try to make conscious choices when I can to consume less in general. Especially less meat.

Fable has partnered with numerous restaurants and retailers to showcase their product. If you’d like to partner with them, you can check out their page here.
