The theme I would love to see for the Met Gala

The Met Gala was yesterday (technically, it did last until very early this morning for some). It’s lauded as the ultimate star-studded affair, with fashion at the center of it all. I always follow the Met Gala every year and love seeing what the celebrities and stylists have planned. I love looking at the behind the scenes content where they show the process of developing a look, and then the finale on the carpet.

The Met Gala is also the pinnacle of luxury, and it makes no apologies for this. I will be transparent and say that this has never, and probably will never, bother me. I love following celebrities and their lives. I don’t get mad when they post photos of private jets. I don’t unfollow them when they showcase exclusive trips.

I do, however, have a challenge for next year’s Met Gala. I would like to see one Met Gala where the theme is “nothing new”. This means that every celebrity must wear an ensemble that is either completely vintage, or composed of vintage pieces. No new fabrics. Nothing. New.

I have two reasons for this. The main reason is, of course, sustainability in fashion. With the rise of fast fashion brands comes the demise of the planet and also the craft of creating a piece. In order to show the need for sustainability in fashion, we need celebrities to step up and show the beauty and creativity of amazing vintage pieces.

The second reason I have is that the craft of dressmaking and creating a one-of-a-kind piece is losing itself amidst the need to keep up with trends. Trends, by definition, do not last. Classics do. I don’t mean that in a boomer “let’s get back to the old days” vibe, I just mean that paying attention to how well something is made is paying respect to the art and talent of that designer. It would be amazing for the Met Gala to honor the history of the craft of fashion design and merge it with modern creativity.

That’s it. That’s what I’d like to see. Anna Wintour, you’re up.
